For all interested in World Heritage – the research project of KULTRANS is hosting “Between dream and reality: Debating the impact of World Heritage Listing” held in Oslo 14-15 November 2013.

The conference will explore the impacts of World Heritage Listing and will address issues such as:

What impact does World Heritage status have?
To what extent does the World Heritage transform places?
More empirically, how does the World Heritage status impact and possibly transform places?
How is World Heritage status used and does it really generate change?

23 Dec: Nearly there!

It is nearly Christmas now, and I thought it was time to post a wintery photo from a Nordic World Heritage Site so I looked through some photos from a conference in Falun, and came across this one. It is one of the very few World Heritage Sites where I have seen any direct reference to peace – the more general frame of work for UNESCO. I had forgotten this photo all together – and was happy to discover it after having to re-read Di Giovine’s book on the World Heritage as a ‘heritage-scape’ (of peace-keeping).

…doom, it is important to remember what is less often mentioned in the news these days: Tikal is on the World Heritage List! Indeed, is one of the oldest World Heritage properties, dating back to 1979 and listed as one of the first ‘mixed’ properties – i.e. it was listed for both natural and cultural values.

Today it has rained like in the Blue Mountains National Park – or shall we say Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The weather signs here in the north are as confusing as the signage in the (Greater) Blue Mountains National Park (World Heritage Area). If one looks more closely, one of the most apparent challenges World Heritage faces is its battles with local, regional or national symbols. In the Greater Blue Mountains, the park symbol of the lyrebird seems to beaten the World Heritage emblem.

On a day of white winter magic here in Oslo, what better to post than a photo from the 2007 Winter Magic in Katoomba – a great ending to one of the most steep, yet amazing learning curves I ever had. Only a week now and we northerners can start looking forward to summer as the sun turns and our long dark days grow longer.
